Description

The Santa Cruz manzanita occurs in one of several locations in California with exceptional diversity of manzanita species. These sites are characterized by substantial coastal influence. Within its range, the Santa Cruz manzanita grows in chaparral and in openings among mixed deciduous and redwood forests. Its form is open and rounded, with large auriculate leaves, cinnamon bark and white to pink-tinged flowers. As in its natural setting, it grows well in partial shade. This setting is recommended for inland sites. The Santa Cruz manzanita grows quite large and may be considered as a striking alternative to the commonly planted ‘Dr. Hurd’ manzanita.
