Description

This hybrid ceanothus originated in the Danville nursery of Louis Edmunds in 1958. It is easy to understand why it is still available after so many years. ‘Blue Cushion’ grows in a dark green, spreading mound to about two feet with a width of about five feet. This compact size is rather rare among ceanothus, most of which are considerably taller. The growth is rapid with densely packed dark, shiny leaves. The flowers are small, medium blue and quite profuse. ‘Blue Cushion’ also accepts partial shade and occasional summer water. Obviously, it is a great ceanothus for small gardens or narrow spaces. I have one in a parking strip in San Jose (Sunset zone 15) that has done quite well in full sun and little water.
