Description

The arroyo lupine adds a swath of spring color in many habitats throughout California and northern Baja. It is native to all seven counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. It grows in an upright, vase-shaped form up to about a meter in height. The leaves are olive green and the flower ranges from blue to lavender. Arroyo lupine seems to do best in heavy soils that retain the winter’s moisture. It will thrive in sun or partial shade. Lupine can be quite attractive to snails and slugs, so bait for these to prevent quick destruction of young plants.
