Description

Santa Rosa Island sage is an example of the paradox often encountered with Channel Island natives: a narrow native range combined with adaptability to other growing conditions. It has an open habit and a round form to about four feet. This sage thrives in full sun and is adaptable to various soil types and drainages. It thrives with occasional water, but (at least in San Jose) maintains a satisfactory appearance when naturalized (not supplemental water). This is the first sage to bloom in my garden – usually displaying its violet to lavender (sometimes white or light blue) blooms by early March. Reportedly hardy to zero degrees F. Santa Rosa Island Sage is native to the northern Channel Islands and a few isolated sites in Baja California.
