Description
The alumroots of the genus Heuchera are endemic to North America, with about 37 species growing primarily in the US but also in Canada and Mexico. California hosts 14 species. Alumroots have been favored in the garden for many centuries because of their attractive foliage and tall spires of often colorful flowers. Plant breeders have been - and continue to be - busy developing garden-friendly hybrids. ‘Santa Ana Cardinal’ was developed by Lee Lenz of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. He reportedly crossed The Channel Island native Heuchera maxima with Heuchera sanguinea, the red-flowering and adaptable native of the Southwest. Santa Ana Cardinal is appreciated because of its large dark green scalloped leaves, rose red flower and tolerance of dry shade.
