This fast growing maple thrives along the west coast from Alaska to southern California. It prefers sites that are at least seasonally moist, where its roots can access subterranean water all year. In Santa Clara County one often finds it within a stone’s throw of waterways, though rarely streamside. The big leaf maple has a straight, vase-shaped form with large, deeply lobed leaves held against gray, furrowed bark. It has a formal look for a wild tree, and makes an excellent landscape tree if space allows. The big leaf maple accepts a wide range of soil types and exposures. Winter deciduous.
