Description
This large tree grows in coastal mountains from southeastern Alaska Big Sur in Monterey County, CA. It grows closer to the coast as one approaches the southern extent of its range. Locally, it grows on the Pacific side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Red alder is one of several members of the birch family found in California. This family includes about a half dozen alders and the hazelnuts. This majestic tree grows to about ninety feet tall with a straight trunk with mottled gray/silver bark. In interior settings it is best grown in a shady setting, where it can grow into the sun as it matures. Supplemental irrigation is a necessity. Regular deep waterings are preferred to frequent irrigation (e.g. near a lawn) since surface roots can be an issue.
