Description
The Little Sur manzanita is endemic to a short stretch of the Big Sur coast in Central California. This is a species that grows within sight of the Ocean. Like most selections of this manzanita species, ‘Rosy Dawn’ forms a low mat of tightly spaced oval leaves. The patch will spread slowly to six feet or more. The branches will root where the leaf nodes touch the ground, essentially forming a new plant. This selection is named for the red tint on young foliage. The winter flowers are white with perhaps a tinge of pink. The red fruit will develop as the summer approaches. While full sun is preferred along the immediate coast, Little Sur manzanita appreciates a shady site in interior gardens.
