Description

This popular selection of the widespread California sagebrush was taken in San Mateo County by Roger Raiche, an influential plantsman of an earlier generation. Like the species it grows as a rounded upright shrub with dense, finely dissected leaves with a gray-green hue. While the species can grow to four feet or so, the ‘Montara’ selection grows to a more domesticated two to three feet. It accepts some shade, but does well in full sun. Its popularity in the garden extends to southern California, testifying to its heat tolerance. Provide well-draining soil and occasional (i.e. monthly) water for optimal appearance. Artemisia californica is semi-dormant by the end of summer without supplemental irrigation.
