Description

This attractive little shrub grows on San Nicolas, San Clemente and Santa Barbara Islands off the coast of Southern California. The form is upright and rounded, with fine needle-like, finely dissected, leaves with the silvery color typical for this group of plants. Also typical of the Artemisia, island sagebrush has small creamy flowers that blend into the foliage. An ideal site has at least moderately well-draining soil and some shade protection in the afternoon. The hotter the location, the more shade protection is recommended. Shade protection will help the appearance of the plant at the end of summer, when the leaves can go limp and dry under drought stress. This small sagebrush is a great choice for small gardens.
