Description

Seascale is a member of coastal strand plant communities from Baja, Mexico, through Northern California. Coastal strand is one of the most restricted plant communities in California since it consists of the narrow strip of sandy land between the high tide mark and interior soil. Seascale thrives in this unique zone as a low-growing mound of small, round, silvery leaves. Like other plants in the Atriplex genus it can grow in salty conditions with the help of glands that separate salt from water, depositing the salt on the surface of the leaves. Something of an experiment when grown away from the coast, seascale should be given well-draining soil, occasional water, and some protection from both hot afternoon sun and winter frost. (No addition of salt is required!). Achieve protection from frost by planting near a structure (wall, fence, etc.) or under another plant.
