Description

The Cascade Oregon grape grows in shady, forested settings from British Columbia to the coast of Central California. The long compound leaves are frond-like with long dark green leaves with spiny margins. The plant is reminiscent of a fern until the tall flower stocks appear in the spring with bright yellow flowers. The flowers brighten a dark corner of the garden. As with other barberries, the flower stocks produce clusters of blue, somewhat bitter, berries. Cascade Oregon grape is the most particular of the California barberries with respect to growing conditions. It requires a rather shady setting with at least occasional water once established. It is a great companion plant for many ferns, ginger root, and moisture-loving heucheras.
