Description

The Oakland star tulip is endemic to the SF Bay Area, where it is often found growing under the partial shade of other shrubs in sloped areas. The plant is quite small - only a few inches in flower. One to several light lavender flowers appear in late spring. I have found that Oakland star tulip thrives in a well-draining mix in partial shade. It is a good candidate for growing in a pot where the fine features can be appreciated during the growing season. The pot may then be put away in a cool, dry place after flowering. Like all California bulbs, no water should be given during the dry season. Set the pot out in an ideal location in mid-fall and provide supplemental water throughout the growing season.
