Description

Mt. Vision ceanothus is one of three varieties spread over the immediate coast and coastal mountains of Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. The porrectus variety is the most limited in distribution, endemic to the Point Reyes area. It grows as a low, mounding groundcover with small, dark green, leathery leaves. Like the other varieties, the leaves are spiny, somewhat like holly. The blossoms are small and dark blue/violet. Mt. Vision is adaptable to a variety of growing conditions, but will appreciate some afternoon shade is grown away from the coast. It receives a good deal of summer moisture from fog in its natural setting, so occasional deep watering might be prudent, though this is not generally recommended for ceanothus.
