Description

The desert lavender is one of many desert species that deserves to be widely planted. It grows as a rounded shrub with silvery - almost white - leaves and light violet flowers. In a sunny site with well-draining soil it performs quite well and looks great all year. It is a rapid grower and responds well to occasional irrigation. Like other members of the mint family, the leaves are fragrant if disturbed. The ‘Cloud Burst’ selection was introduced by Tree of Life Nursery around 2020. It is reportedly about half the size of the species in both height and width. Desert lavender is said to be frost tender. Temperatures in the low twenties can cause dieback. In San Jose, there has not been a “hard frost” of this type for decades. All my desert lavender has done quite well in pots and in the ground.
