Description
Engelmann’s hedgehog is the most widespread of the hedgehog cactuses. It ranges through much of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts, southern Nevada and Utah. It continues as a common member of desert plant communities in Sonora and northern Baja, Mexico. The hedgehog moniker comes from the tendency of cactuses in this genus to form a nearly hemispherical mound of tightly spaced spiny stems. From a distance, it can look like a mossy stone. One of the most beautiful California cactus in flower, Engelmann’s cactus erupts in early spring with conical flowers of wine-purple or rose-pink. The flowers last only several days, opening in the morning and closing in the evening. Pollinated flowers produce edible red or orange spherical fruit. Like other California cactuses, it is best to grow Engelmann's hedgehog in a pot with a well-draining medium, since winter moisture can cause root rot. A pot can be easily protected from moisture during the cold months.
