Description
The widespread sunflower family is represented in California by plants of varied forms. Some grow as large woody shrubs (e.g. Baccharis). Others hug the ground as little perennials (e.g. Antenarria). California sunflower is one of the larger and distinct sunflowers. Following winter dormancy (no above ground growth), stems emerge with opposite, lance-shaped leaves. These do not branch and grow quite tall. In late summer the stems are topped with one to several bright yellow daisy-flowers. Copious seed is produced, providing fodder for finches and other birds. With adequate water and sun, California sunflower can grow into quite a tangle, so should be planted with care.
