Description
This rare cypress is native to the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains from Butano Ridge to Bonny Doon. So far only five groves have been identified. It is the only species of cypress found within its range. However, California’s cypresses are difficult to differentiate from one another so the validity of many species is questionable. See Conifers of California by Ronald Lanner for a detailed discussion. One of the difficulties is that cypresses will vary considerably in form based on growing conditions. In lean soil, Santa Cruz cypress grows as a diminutive shrub. In more fertile soil, one may anticipate a wide tree to fifty feet. Like other cypress, Santa Cruz cypress begins its rapid growth with a round form and upturned branches, something like an open fan. As the tree matures it becomes open and vase shaped with upturned branches. The young bark is burnt orange and matures to silvery gray. Santa Cruz cypress is an adaptable and ornate tree where its size may be accommodated.
