Description

This variety of Hosackia crassifolia is found in San Diego County near the border as well as a small population in San Luis Obispo County. The species occurs in mountainous regions throughout the state, including the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Otay Mountain lotus flowers in early spring with tubular flowers of rich red and white. These are displayed against soft gray compound leaves. Its mountain habitat often provides light shade and occasional summer moisture, so this should be mimicked in the garden. Adaptable to various soil types and drainages, but well-draining soil is best.
