Description

This beautiful melic grass grows in much of California in many plant communities. Its preferred habitat is areas with at least a half day of sun in meadows and woodlands. This is a cool season grass, emerging in the winter from late summer dormancy. The blades are wide and upright, forming an expanding clump. In mid-spring the flower stalks rise above the foliage, doubling the height of the plant. The maturing seeds are large, blonde and quite attractive. As the summer progresses, California melicgrass will go dormant (brown). It may be cut back at this time if this is not the look you want. Some water may keep it a little greener a little longer, but this can kill the plant. Better to let natural rainfall take care of this grass.
