Description

Gray pine is the emblematic conifer of the lower to middle elevation foothills surrounding California’s Central Valley. It thrives in hot, dry conditions, often in lean soil. The coastal mountains also host this endemic pine under similar conditions. That includes the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range in Santa Clara County. Gray pine grows in an open form with upturned branches covered with long silver-gray needles. The resulting shade is quite bright which allows for underplanting with dry-loving plants that would benefit from some sun protection. The cones bear pine nuts that are the best tasting of any California conifer, and quite nutritious. This is a large tree, so plant with that in mind.
