Description
This amazingly adaptable grass grows in nearly every county in California, in a wide range of plant communities. Pine bluegrass is one of the few plants in the state that one is as likely to encounter on a trip to the beach as on a trip to Lake Tahoe. A small tuft of foliage appears after summer dormant, topped by attractive inflorescences in early spring. As the seed matures, the plant begins to go dormant once again. It is tempting to try to stave off dormancy with additional water, but it is better to accept this “down time,” especially since bluegrass prefers dry conditions. Remove the dormant seed heads to improve the appearance.
