Description

Several species of the genus Polemonium grace California with their frond-like, pinnately compound leaves and generous pastel blooms. With the exception of royal Jacob’s ladder, Polemonium carneum, they grow at high elevations, well above the snow line and often in rocky alpine settings. Sky pilot thrives in such inhospitable environments from the northern half of California into much of the western US and Canada. Sky pilot is one of the few alpine plants that seems to thrive at lower elevations. With a well-draining, fertile substrate, this diminutive perennial will expand quickly and bloom from spring to fall. Steady moisture is important. Sky pilot will disappear if allowed to dry out. Shade is also important when grown at lower elevations. All in all, sky pilot is a great candidate for a pot or crevice garden.
