Description

The western choke cherry grows in much of mountainous California, being excluded only from southeastern deserts. It seems to prefer areas of higher than average seasonal or perennial rainfall. Like many member of the genus, western choke cherry grows as a large shrub or small tree and will spread to form a thicket via rhizomes if happy. The leaves are solid green and lance-shaped with serrated margins. These grow densely on the plant, rendering it an effective screen. The spring blooms are bright white and prominent. The subsequent fruit is said to be edible, though somewhat bitter. Plant western choke cherry in fairly well draining soil, with some protection from the later afternoon sun. Provide occasional summer water.
