Description

The bluewitch nightshade is one of those far flung native plants. It grows in just about every county in the state, in our neighboring states, and Mexico. Its basic form is a rounded open perennial with lance-shaped, oval leaves and a solid purple flower in late winter or spring. Many varieties occur within its range with attractive variations on this theme. The incanum variety grows in the mountains of the Central Coast. It is distinct for its silvery white stems and foliage, which help to show off the purple blooms. Like all bluewitch nightshades, the incanum variety will thrive in partial shade or full sun and appreciate occasional summer water once established. It will shed its leaves at the end of the summer if water is withheld. I grow mine near an often used spigot where there is usually water around.
