Description

This robust grape grows in much of California north of Bakersfield, with a few scattered populations to the south. California grape grows as multiple trailing vines covered with apple-green, round leaves. Following winter dormancy new grows springs forth from the old vines and climbs and spreads in all directions. After flowering, purple grapes develop which are relished by wildlife, and may best be left for them. The rate of growth on an established plant is quite a phenomenon, and should be planned for when siting the vine. Keeping some “buffer zone” between the plant and other plants and structures will facilitate containment efforts. Yearly aggressive pruning or coppicing will limit the sprawl somewhat. Also, California grape responds quite well to water, so keeping your plant hot and dry will also slow it down.
