Description
California fan palm grows in many moist areas throughout the southwest and northern Mexico. It is the West’s only native palm. Paleobotanists tell us that the California fan palm was once widespread but has contracted as its native climate has dried. A great place to visit a native stand is Borrego Springs in San Diego County. There a small population surrounds the spring itself. The straight wide trunks of the many mature palms form a natural basilica of sorts. The fan-like leaves dry out each year and will remain on the plant unless removed, forming a shaggy skirt. Although a southern species, this palm tolerates the colder setting of the SF Bay Area. Well-draining soil is preferred. Like other palms, California fan palm will appreciate supplemental irrigation once established.
